It Already Has a Name. It's Called Routing

July 25, 2026 · Originally posted on LinkedIn

Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA and 22 others just signed a three-page open letter to the US government about the future of AI.

Strip out the policy language and the argument aimed at businesses is: use a cheaper model when the task is easy.

That already has a name. It's called routing.

The letter is really about who gets to sell you AI, and that fight matters. But the part pointed at you is a settings or habits change you could make this afternoon.

Almost nobody makes it. Proving the cheap model is good enough for a given job means writing a test set, and that is the least glamorous work in the building.

You are not paying frontier prices because your problems are hard. You are paying them because nobody wanted to write the test.
