I WhatsApp like my mom texts.
(Hi Mom.)
During a late-night catch-up with a buddy on the other side of the Atlantic, I said "I'll WhatsApp you."
In true Gen Z frankness, and with a smile in his voice to soften the blow, he replied:
"By the way, don't worry about formality. No 'Hey, how's it been? - I was wondering if... - Thanks - Mathieu.'"
When you're lucky enough to realize something in-the-moment, grab that realization by the horns. And that was one of those times.
Want this running in your team?
evoilabs starts with one task, the one your team repeats every week, and builds the system that handles it. Then your team builds the next one.
See how it works →He unknowingly hit the nail on the head of something I'd been toiling with for a while:
My messages are usually long (>4 lines) and overly structured (think paragraphs). Replies came back a sentence at a time, no punctuation, all lowercase.
Those words took me back to an evening conversation at the dinner table in high school, when I told my mom she didn't have to sign her texts. No "Regards." No paragraphs. It took my mom years to drop the formality habit. Not sure how long it'll take me, but here's to trying.
Who else feels old?
P.S. I dictated this entire post (including this PS) through Wispr Flow while on my long runs as part of my ultramarathon training (more on this soon). For anyone who's still not tried it: speech-to-text these days is amazing, give it a shot.
